Artist Profile
Chu Teh Chun (1920-2014) was from Baitou Zhen, Jiangsu province, China. He came from a prosperous family of medical doctors, who were collectors of calligraphies and traditional Chinese paintings. In 1935, he enrolled the National Academy of Fine Arts, Hangzhou and graduated with honors in 1941. He was then be an appointed assistant professor there. In 1942, he was nominated to be a professor at the Central University of Nanjing.
After the Second World War, he left Nanjing and moved to Taipei, Taiwan in 1949. He became the appointed professor in the Department of Architecture at the Taipei School of Industry in 1950. In 1954, He had his first solo exhibition at Zhongshan Hall in Taipei.
With the exhibition revenue as the capital for study, he went to Paris, France to attend drawing classes at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in 1955. He settled in Paris to perfect his art culture. In 1956, He won a silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Français, with an academic portrait of his wife Tung Ching-Chao. He visited the exhibition of Nicolas de Staël at the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris. He was fascinated with the retrospective of Nicolas who introduced him to abstract art. He opened a new chapter in abstract art, inspired by calligraphy. His art met with success in France and others countries following solo and group exhibitions in Pittsburg, Jerusalem, Athens, Sao Paulo. In 1957, He had his first solo exhibition at the Haut Pavé Gallery in Paris. He became a citizen of France in 1980.
In 1987, he had his First retrospective exhibition at the National Museum of History in Taipei, 32 years since leaving the country. In 1997, First Travelling Exhibition (exhibit his works of 1985-1996) organized by the French Association for Artistic Action of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (AFAA) appeared in the Fine Arts Palace of Beijing, in the Fine Arts Museum of Hong Kong, then in Fine Arts Museum in Kaoshiung and in Taipei. End of the year, he was elected as a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts of the Institute de France (l’ Institut des Beaux-Arts de l’ Académie Française). His Second Travelling Exhibition organized by the AFAA again in 2000-2001 started at the Shanghai Museum in Shanghai, then in Guangdong Arts Museum and end in Pusan Metropolitan Museum, South Korea. In 2001, he was honored the Knight of the Academic Palms by the French Ministry of Education and the Knight of the Legion of Honor of the highest artistic achievement award by the President. In 2006, he gained the Outstanding Award from the European Union.
