Artist Profile
Wang was born in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province in 1957. In 1984, he graduated from the oil painting department of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, and currently lives and works in Beijing, China. He is a Chinese artist known for being the leader of the new art movement that erupted in China after 1989, and for his series of paintings which use images of propaganda from the Cultural Revoution (1966-1976) and contemporary brand names from western advertising, entitled Great Criticism.
During the last two decades, the Chinese art field was rapidly commercialized and the wealth & social status of Chinese artists' began to rise. Today they have managed to place themselves among the wealthy class. In 2005, Wang's Great Criticism Series sold for 1.08 million RMB and set a record for the contemporary Chinese market. Two years later, he sold his Mao AO painting from 1988 for £2,036,000 at a Phillips de Pury & Company auction in London in December 2007. This has lead to some viewing him as an “art manufacturing machine”.
